Network Shows on the Bubble

TV Guide reports the following network shows at risk to being canceled:

  1. "Body of Proof" (ABC)
  2. "Community" (NBC)
  3. "CSI: NY" (CBS)
  4. "Fringe" (Fox)
  5. "A Gifted Man" (CBS)
  6. "Harry's Law" (NBC)
  7. "Hawaii Five-0" (CBS)
  8. "Nikita" (CW)
  9. "Pan Am" (ABC)
  10. "Prime Suspect" (NBC)
  11. "Unforgettable" (CBS)

I like Fringe and Hawaii Five-0. Maybe its time the networks look at DVR viewership. If one of your shows is on the list write the network.

Fringe always seems to be on the bubble, which is a shame as it's a great show. I feel that this season is going well, too, and is avoiding any "monster of the week" feel that similar shows often have. I also like how they are making it where new viewers could come in and not feel too lost or confused (a potential problem with the building story across the first 3 seasons). But of course, my views are DVR'ed, like many people...and those of us who watch next to nothing but sports live are unfortunately not counted with their archaic system.

Some of those shows I'm less surprised about, like Community. I tried to like it, I really did. I don't honestly know how it made it this many seasons, as I honestly couldn't make it past a few episodes.

I've been watching Pan Am, it's been decent so far. Some of the characters are a bit forgettable I find, though in general it's entertaining. I have a few questions I keep asking every episode, like "so, why again are they getting a flight attendant to be a secret agent?" which make it somewhat too unbelievable, though, and I still feel like the "main" plot or storyline is a bit wandering. But it has definite potential, and is well written. We'll see if it sticks around...

And I know it's not on the list, but it's about time The Walking Dead is back!

I am a huge Joel McHale fan, but "Community" is a horrible show.

The only way that "Community" and "horrible" should be used together in the same sentence is if the sentence reads, "Community is so good that it makes every other sitcom on TV seem horrible by comparison!"

Are you ka-raazy?! I can accept Community not being everybody's cup of tea, but "horrible"? No, sir. No, no, no. There are opinions, and I can respect those, but that comment is just plain wrong. It is factually incorrect. It is an objective, scientific truth that Community is an excellent show, and if one requires proof, all one need do is watch the most recent episode, "Remedial Chaos Theory", read the perfect 10 out of 10 review:

and then marvel in the glory of seeing all 7 timelines play out simultaneously in what can only be described as sheer brilliance:

Community. Watch it. And if you don't like it? You are wrong.

:D

I watched that clip you posted. It was pretty good, I'll give you that. And when I tried to get into Community, I remember one scene that had me rolling, in the Introduction to Film episode near the end when they show the movie, it was absolutely hilarious.

But that's the problem I have with Community. It does have some great scenes. But they are too few and far between, with mediocre comedy, cliché, overdone characters, and predictable, uninspired plots filling everything else. I believe I watched about 8 or 9 episodes from season 1, and only 2 times do I remember really laughing much at all.

I personally wouldn't use the word "horrible" for the show...but I doubt you'd like my preferred adjectives much better: unoriginal, predictable, dull, uninspired, cliché...and most of all, forgettable.

Heh,

I just go to bat for Community because it is CONSTANTLY in danger of cancellation and it's on of my favourite shows and I don't want to see it go away!

It certainly is a "heightened" reality with exaggerated characters, and I know how that turns a lot of people off. I think the bigger problem for the show though is that it's tough to "get into". If you're just catching a random episode, it isn't the easiest show to enjoy right away. Even though it isn't heavily serialized, so much of the comedy comes from knowing the characters really well and their inter-relationships. So "fresh eyes" really won't catch most of what makes the show so funny to fans like me who have seen every episode.

What makes me such a fan though is that when Community is at its best, it is utterly brilliant. Chaos Theory was one example, but both of the "Paintball" season finales were just amazingly good, as well as the Christmas Claymation episode the "Clip show" episode, the "Secret Garden" and a number of others.

What I think most people miss is that Community is primarily a parody show. It's at its most clever when it is parodying a movie, TV show or other piece of pop culture. But not every episode is an obvious parody, so again, I get how someone who's just checking out a random episode might not "get it".

It's a shame. It's tough when you're on the worst Network that does zero promotion for your show. When you're on at 8pm on Thurs, up against the heavy hitters of all the other Networks. And when utter crap like Two and a Half Men and Last Man Standing pull in some 20 million viewers each week. It's just a sad, sorry state of affairs :p
